Pharm.D Is it really required? - my views

Much discussion is going on pharm.D course in India.  In my view, starting pharm.D course is only to serve the purpose of colleges.  Very huge gap between supply and demand of pharmacy students have occurred.  Many pharmacy students are coming out every year (Both B.pharm and M.pharm), but they are not finding jobs. Students are becoming aware of it.  Seats in new colleges are not being filled up.  So it became necessity to introduce a new course and attract students towards pharmacy colleges.  They support the starting of course by various reasons for change in health care system.  Doctors have already started agitation against the course.

Even if, pharm.D students are allowed in hospital setting, salary will not be that much attractive.  They are saying that Pharm.D students are also eligible to work in clinical research areas.  In fact, there is much competition in this area also from students of institutes like ICRI, Crema academy and also pharmacology students. I do not think in India, the importance of pharmacists will be recognized so early.  There are many problems to be addressed regarding medicines in India and Indian Health care system.  So, right now I think future of Pharm.D person is questionable.  They have to face many challenges and struggle to accommodate in any area either it is hospital or clinical research area or any other. It is said by president of PCI, Dr.B.Suresh itself as join the Pharm.D course if you are willing to face challenges in Pharmacy sector.

  2. Aim of introducing this course is not to attract students towards pharmacy colleges..its to make pupils eligible for the exams required for registration as a pharmacist in US and other countries abroad and also its infact our target to establish community pharmacy services in India,as set by Dr.A.P.J. Abdul kalam in pharmavision-2020.Plz chek this address www.bii.in/page/academic_program/vision_2020.asp

coming to clinical research point of view. a pharmD person is with full skill in patient care and handling the adverse cases. so even if there is competition a skilled person can get through it.

yeah facing the challenges is always there..during earlier days when B.pharm course was introduced,if people joining it had the same thought then it would not have been this situation-where people of those times are ruling the pharma world in our country.atleast some of us must work for the cause of developing it.

Some of the US based hospitals like appolo hospitals in Bangalore, and some MNC hospitals like Fortis ,piramil healthcare are recruiting pharmDs and some skillful b.pharm graduates as the clinical pharmacists.till now there are around 12-15 pharmacovigilence centres in our india which are eagerly waiting to recruit graduates with handful of skill and also ethics.this is not my personal opinion it was told in 62nd IPC conference 2010 held at manipal university.I say its the time of need for such course for achieving better healthcare.

Agitations are common against any development, facing it challengingly and working for developing it definitely brings some historical events and fruitful achievements in our Indian Healthcare Industry.

Just think of our hospital settings there are no proper pharmacotherapeutic services, patient counselling, drug information services,Therapeutic Drug Monitoring servicesetc..why cant we make patients aware of importance of all these clinical pharmacy services while we study i.e during our ward rounds.

I hopefully say that there are going to be some good changes in our Indian Health Care industries in hospital settings..

    Thank u,

    with regards,
